The murals rejuvenated the town, and the businesses that followed them — the Chemainus Theatre, antiques dealers, places to eat — are strung along the historic main street. A shopping mall was then built about a kilometre away, so the town’s commercial glass is split across two quite different frontages. On the historic street the panes sit under painted walls that cannot take overspray and are read from the outside by people deciding whether to come in, which puts the outside of the glass ahead of the inside. Out by the mall the glass is modern, larger, unobstructed and reached from level ground. The ferry terminal serving Thetis and Penelakut Islands adds a third case: anything with a sightline to Stewart Channel picks up salt, and salt returns faster than dirt does and will not wait for an annual visit.

Chemainus draws people specifically to look at its walls — mural tours have run by horse-drawn wagon since the early 1980s — so the main street carries foot traffic right through the warm months, and a frontage is easier to do properly when there is nobody to work around. Early spring or autumn is the practical answer: growth on paving and entry steps has had the wet months to establish, so the surface is genuinely worth cleaning, and the street is quiet enough to work in sections and keep a route past the job open the whole time.
