What people come to see is a frontage of wood-framed, wood-clad buildings with false fronts — the form the town’s first commercial buildings took before brick arrived in later decades. A streetscape that is looked at on foot puts its walking surface directly in front of the thing being looked at, which is a different standard from a car park. The growth that matters is the thin black film that establishes on any paving staying shaded through the wet months, and on a heritage frontage it has to come off without the wall behind it being touched: no overspray onto old timber, no solution running down onto boards that will hold it. Beyond the commercial block the town’s paths run through Transfer Beach Park, Kinsmen Park and Davis Road Park, which have the same seasonal problem and none of the constraint.
