A lot backing onto one of them takes a continuous fall of needles and fine debris rather than a seasonal one, and that debris is what holds water against a shingle long enough for moss to root into the mat. Removal is deliberately slow: the moss is treated, left to die and allowed to weather off over the following months, because pulling or blasting it takes the granules with it and shortens the roof to make it tidy on the day.
