Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park runs roughly two kilometres of beach and is one of the places seabirds gather in large numbers in spring for the herring spawn, which is a genuine event here rather than a passing one. Glass on that frontage gets two things at once. Droppings are acidic and will etch if left through a dry summer, so they want removing rather than waiting out. And the sand — fine, dry, coming off flats that extend almost a kilometre at low water — is abrasive, which makes the wrong method actively damaging: dragging a dry cloth across a pane with grit on it is how glass ends up scratched, so the surface is flooded first and only then worked. Sliding-door tracks and window channels collect the same grit and need clearing out rather than rinsing. None of that applies a few streets back from the beach.
